The observer’s reflection...

My first teaching position at a tertiary institution was in 2017, in a module called Digital Media and Sound, where the students primarily studied visual arts. At that time, I had high expectations for students, and Ben was among those who lived up to those expectations - I remember he was always punctual and very diligent with his assignments.

That was the only time I taught Ben. A few years later, when I had my personal exhibition, the project manager invited a group of students to help, and Ben was one of them. By then, he had already graduated and continued his studies at Hong Kong Baptist University.

When I invited him to participate in this project, I didn't expect him to suggest starting a sound tutorial class. Do art courses really need tutoring? I was also curious about what could be taught in a sound tutorial class.

I didn’t have much input regarding these tutorial lessons; all the course design, data collection, and equipment preparation were taken care of by Ben. To reduce his pressure (perhaps I was overthinking), I only stayed for a very short time each session to observe.

Watching this young person earnestly share his views on sound and attempting to "open up" the auditory perception of the participating students was truly moving! If my teachers back then saw me teaching in the classroom, would they have the same feeling? Although the content of the tutorial classes is somewhat similar to the college courses, that relaxed atmosphere is probably something that can only be achieved through personal experience sharing, like Ben does.
