Jamming, a Call & Response Exercise
(Inspired by 「撞機」)

In Dino’s words...

Key Concepts
  •  Jamming Could be Fun!
  •  Non-verbal acoustic communication - Call => Response to Call => Response to Response => … (Listen <=> Express)
  •  Feedback / Feedback loop
  •  “Flow” of the artist / “Flow” of the art (in time-based medium)
  •  Expressiveness / Freedom

Technically…
  • How to trigger a sound?
  • Formal Qualities: Tonality / Rhythm / Harmony / Loudness / Contextualiztion of Sound
  • The art of noise - focus on sound system itself (feedback / noise from bad contact / no-input mixer technique / etc.)

20 - 30 mins
6 - 8 participants

Goal:
  • Arouse curiosity about different sound in space
  • Encourage active listening of sounds in the space, even ambient sounds of the space
  • How a series of “call and response” could make an improvisational, collaborative soundwork, when participants can aware of how their own sound and others are contributing for the same improvisational work
  • “You don’t need to be a trained musician to enjoy jamming”
  • How non-verbal communication is possible in a creative, open-minded way

Instructions:
  1. Within the space, find an object that make interesting sound to you. (It could be from a combination of a few objects in the space, using your body, or even from your phone. Participants are encouraged to be resourceful). Pay attention to what sound you want to make, a short one or a long one? A loud one or a quiet one?
  2. With the object, find a position in the space you feel most settled.
  3. Each participant introduces his/her sound to everyone.
  4. The moderator starts the round with the first sound.
  5. Any of the participants are free to make any sound at any time. While two sounds are made at the same time, all participants should make a sound together, getting louder and louder, until hearing a clap.
  6. Repeat 5, but this time, adjust your position so you don’t see other participants. Also, let’s try to take more time this time, hoping to make a longer piece together.
